Manhattan was big closeouts and backwash, El Porto was probably really good and I wouldn't doubt that Hammerland was off the chain. You could see Big Jetty cloud breaking standing on Manhattan Pier, so no doubt Hammerland was pumping. I shot photos today; yesterday I put in a 6 hour sesh. I knew I'd have to surf my brains out a day before the REAL swell if I was going to stay sane today shooting. I scored Torrance for an hour at 4-5' hollow, offshore, yesterday, all alone, and then a squall came in and it went flat and howling side/onshore. Weird, huh.
dropkneeing is a sin...isn't it?

Big Disappointment
This always happens on the first big swell of the year. Everyone's expectations (including mine) go sky high and we forget that the first true winter swell tears up all the sand bars and assorted flotsam and jetsam - both natural and man made garbage, combining to make for one giant swirling mass of dark water, crappy waves and torn up beaches.
The only surprise this year is it took this long for it to arrive. Usually happens in November. But never fear, winter is here!

Sunday
Surfed Churches on south county on Sunday. I was the only kneelo out, competing with about 10 longboarders. The conditions were better suited for me than them. It was HH+ sets, but was victory at sea. Every once in a while, the wind would slow or direction would change and you could get about a 1/2 hour of good HH walls and peaks. Overall it was worth the paddle once you got in, but it took some convincing.

Same here bee, i was real disappointed. saw a couple kneelo's going out at RJ's on saturday (robertson brothers?) and another at mags.Checked C-Street , S.S. NeptunesNest, ElPoorToe, Huntington
found some decent surf but not what I expected in size or quality.
So I stayed dry and bought a roasted chicken.
Its all bones now.
hmmm tom backer needs to get mine and beeline's #New jetty at Bolsa was smokin' on Saturday morning! I checked the whole coast from Salt Creek to HB and was very stoked when I pulled up to the "new jetty". Bolsa was not only the biggest in OC but also the best shape.
Thanks to Tom Backer for giving me the heads up to check the place out.

Got double-overhead surf at Pleasure Point this morning with just 3 other guys. A bit lumpy, but worth it. 2nd wave, I felt my board loose traction. Flipped it over after the wave--yup, one of the fins had busted off. Bummer...
Had to paddle in and surf the Hook on my small wave board. Still about 6-10' and not too crowded, and another kneelo. Some pics posted in the photo album.
Santa Cruz just never closes out, that's for sure, even when the swells are big. Hopefully, we'll have some of that for Jan. 8-13.
