Team USA is stoked for an epic adventure to South Africa. In August we travel to the bucket list surf destination of Jeffreys Bay for the 2024 Kneeboard Surfing World Titles. This year’s event promises to be the biggest and best contest and kneelo gathering of all time at one of the world’s premier surf breaks. We’ll be joining current and former champions and top kneeboard surfers from South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Brazil, Portugal, Spain, France, Canada, United Kingdom, Ireland and other Venezuela. The competition will be stiff, and we are bringing our best.
This year’s US Team is one of the biggest and strongest we’ve ever fielded. The team includes the current world number two and three surfers from the 2022 World Titles Open Division and three age division champions. Six of the top seven kneeboarders from the 2024 US Kneeboard Titles will be competing in South Africa. We’ll have competitors in the Open, Women’s division and six of nine age divisions. Current US Champion, World #3, and World Pro Junior Champ Kevin Skvarna and World #2, Senior Champ Sam Coyne will be looking to improve on their Portugal results. At the other end of the age groups, defending Immortals Champion Scott Wessling shows us that you can keep getting better with age.
Representing the state of Hawaii and Oahu’s East Side, Darren is a long time kneeboarder and photographer. His local is Sandy Beach, but you’ll often find him travelling in New Zealand and other surf destinations.

Most Memorable Contest Experience: My first world titles was with the US Team in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico in February 1988. That was “the team without Kelly Slater” since he bombed out in the US team trials. Neither I nor the US Team did very well, but it was still incredible to surf in front of thousands of very enthusiastic Puerto Ricans who arrived early, partied all day and stayed late.

Spent considerable time in the Central California area (San Luis Obispo, Monterey, Santa Cruz) where my surfing really took off, getting to surf much heavier waves. I’ve come close, but never have won it in the decade+ of contests I’ve surfed in. But, in 2019 I finally won. It was especially special since it would be my last year as a junior/pro junior.

- 2009 US Titles Santa Cruz: First place AA division, which by far were the best waves I have ever surfed at Steamer Lane.
- 2014 US Titles Huntington Pier: Third place AAA. The difference between this contest and the other contests was everyone was surfing at their prime. It seemed to me the common denominator was Bruce Hart’s Flashpoint surfboards, I was sold.

Age Division: Seniors
Contest Experience: My most notable contest result would have to be in last years 2019 KSUSA US Titles in which I finally made it to the Open final. Before that was probably one of my first contests way back in 2007 at Steamer lane (Worlds) in which I won my age division as a Junior. There wasn’t very many of us in that bracket but the waves were pumping for the final, it was epic to have the lane to ourselves!

Hopefully try some new food and learn about South Africa’s culture a bit more. Can’t wait to be in South Africa meeting new brothas and sisters from all over and running into some old friends I met back in 2007 and 2020. It’ll be fun to share the stoke and camaraderie with some legends and beyond stoked to represent Team USA!

After several years as a standup surfer through high school, my older brother, Mark, shaped me a 5’0″ rocket and challenged me in 1972 to give kneeriding a try. 52 years later, still hooked! Added comps into my surfing in 2003 and that’s really forced me to up my game. Now I’m one of the older active kneelos around and enjoying that challenge!
Age Division: Invincibles
Contest Experience:
- Best results for World Kneeboarding Titles are twice making it to the Open Division Quarterfinals (2020 and 2022), twice with 2nd place finishes in my age division (2009 and 2020), and the Immortals Division Champ for 2022.
