anyone consider a set-up like this? by adding or subtracting fins you could ride single, tri, quad, five, or assymetric. open boxes supply drag but the versatility might outweigh the negatives, especially if you want to go single fin or bonzer, which is what this board is trying to be.

i rode a bing bonzer in the 70's (standup) and it definitely was not a glorified single fin. the single to double concave, while exaggerated then and more refined now, delivered amazing speed and quickness and was years ahead of its time. i know there are some who long for a big greenough center fin, some tout tri fins, others quads, maybe by ordering a quad with an appropriately placed center box and acquiring the right fins you can ride whatever suits your mood. bonzer forward fins have an outward angle set that is unique to the system, as this picture shows.

I have a 5 fin setup, which I change depending on conditions between a four, tri and a five finner. been riding it for about 2 years on and off. Well for the board shape that it is I only ride it in under 2 foot conditions

what coincidence! i was imagining bud's stub vector with a center box added to use on big fat lazy windswell days that plague the east in summer. it would have to be placed about where the center fin on a tri would go.

I tried using my MRX fins with a gs trailer but I found the results dissapointing. I went back to my G5's and got back into the magic of an Aussie tri. Yesterday I picked up a pair of Occy's and am waiting for another swell to try them out.
Any one brave enough to make a quad optional setup, keep reading.
Place the aditional plugs so that the back of the fins will be in line with the existing center fin.
IE, same distance up from the tail. Also set the back fin marks at 2 3/4" from the rail.

Tow in the fins 1/8" off of parralel.

Tilt them out 1 1/2" degrees only.

!!!!!MAKE SURE YOU USE CENTER FIN PLUGS!!!!!

makes more sense to me to take a functional quad and add the ability to pull the quad trailers and swap in a center skeg by adding plugs or a box. lot easier to place a center fin plus you know you already have 4 of the fins working right, by design.

It's been a few weeks since I plugged in a pair of Occy fins with a gs trailer into my Blast 5'11" tri. I think this is close to an ideal set up for waves chest to a few feet over head. My board is still loose but I feel that I can get some drive speed, not just flow speed out of it.
Florida's been getting some Bermuda High trade wind swell in the 2'-4' range, so I really need to evaluate it something with a bit more size.
Hey Beeline, I'm still planning to pop in a TC redline for a trailer.

Maybe the Occy template is the best choice for an Ausse Tri-Fin, I'll try one. Currently I'm riding G-6FCS so far and It's time to try something new..........

Kneeboard is soul surf !!!

Occy fin

Post by ivandill »

My experienced with the occy fins is one of frutration it keep me sliding when i didnt wanted , in botton turn, it made the board so loose that you lost control of the turn, and i didnt like that, itmade me lost my stability on the board. Sure that my experience and someone else could find this and advantage.I use the tc redline also and with a gx trailer and like it better because is alarger fin it make the board a little controlable but still got the looseness we want from tri fin board. But went i put the center tc redline fin to the board the board get so stif that it doesnt want to turn, doesnt work. My best set up right now are the Blast side fin with a GS trailer,it gave me the right combination of drive ,speed and still loose enought that you can trow your tail around and do some accidental three sixtys. Again this it my experienced, i gave the occy fin to a friend and he is using them alot on his small boards.

I like being able to adjust my fin setup for different surf conditions.

When I bought my new board it had G3000's in it. I then bought the tiny GS trailer fin and this made it a lot looser. I then got more fin plugs put in, pushing the pivot point forward (it was a bit too far back). With the G3000 and a GS trailer it is super loose, tail slides heaps, which is a good set up for powerless beachies. Putting the G3000 center fin back in tightened it up and can handle bigger surf, up to 6'.

My husband had GRs and a GYU center fin, which is a really good setup, he has surfed in 3' to 6' and is pleased with the set up. He has just put in TF1s with a GS trailer, but has not been able to test it yet. I have put in his GRs and GYU and can't wait to test the set up out. I have been looking at the Occy's and am curious about their performance.

Cheers Sophia

Eric,
I've had great success with FCS AM's as side fins
Smoother than the Occys (consistent throughout the turn, where the Occy's seem to prefer hard slashing - like Occy surfs) Found I get a better quality turn from them.
But I still swap finsets occasionally for a change of scenery.
