I remember reading about this product a few years back. I think there's also some black and white camo sticker that they sell which claims to scare off the landlord. I'll stick to good old fashion gut instinct and prayer...

shark stuff
I posed the question to Gigs, if surfers in South Africa had any feedback on these things. He said he has used them, but only when doing tow in's. Claims they were strange getting use to because of the pulsing shock that you definatly can feel. As far as if they might actually attract sharks and jeopardize someone in the vacinity, he say's thats just a risk you gotta take. Other wise he has no definative endorsement other than he's alive to talk about it, and the shark problem down there is a "very serious concern, they really are a big issue."
the topic has been posted here (last summer i believe). however while watching a tv show last week on the shark problem to a cummunity in brazil (discovery channel). what they found was that the increase in shark attacks (blamed on whitey, but was later proven as bull sharks) was caused by the removal of a natural reef and of the fish that the bullsharks used to feed on. so with no fish to eat there was a steady supply of human beach dwellers to consume and a wide open accessway thru the reef for the sharks to access the swimmers. Hey! at least there is a nice hotel there now.
At the end of the show they showed lifeguards walking down the beach with a couple of those electronic shark deflectors wrapped around their legs

Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water...
Orcas have been tracked down to the Bay Area to feed on salmon. Story is on www.sfgate.com.
While they 'aren't a threat' to humans, they sure could be!
Since they have no natural predators, I'm developing a full board-length picture of Chuck Norris. The chin alone will send them back to Puget Sound. Look for these in addition to EC's KSUSA briefs at online outlets soon!
The real point isn't about the danger of the Orcas, but that their presence is an indication of how bad the Klamath population has been depleted, and how they could be a factor in Bay Area Salmon populations.
I'm hoping the ones down here leave the salmon alone and munch seals and sharks... and give me lifts out to the lineup...

Anyone ever thought about taking your dog surfing with you as a watchdog?

was surfin last week at my local wen some playfull dolphins came outa nowhere. they hung around for an hour or so, dropping in on every one and entertaining us all. anyway later that day i heard there was also a shark in the area at the same time.. so were the dolphins protecting us? or trying to warn us? i like to think so.
i have been surfing for ten years in dunedin new zealand and never had bottle nose dolphins cum and play before and never seen a big shark while surfing either.

In Hawaii (Oahu), Great Whites and Tigers are known to feed on pods of Spinner Dolphins. Only during a particular time of the year though. Whites are not common to the Hawaiian waters, but the reports of sightings are increasing each year.
On Oahu's n/shore, I've been in the lineup when a pod of dolphins came in, within 30' or so. All of a sudden they took off down the coast in a mad frenzy. Time to go in...

This happened on April 1st. They're both standard cases of sharks accidently biting humans in murky water.
FORT PIERCE, Fla. — A 9-year-old boy and an adult were apparently bitten by sharks off the beaches of a barrier island, authorities said. Their injuries were not considered life-threatening.
The attacks happened within an hour of each other Saturday in the water along Hutchinson Island in St. Lucie County on Florida's east coast.
The boy was bitten on his right buttock and thigh at Waveland Park, St. Lucie County Fire District spokeswoman Catherine Whitaker said. He was released after treatment at a local hospital.
About an hour later, a 30-year-old surfer at Normandy Beach was bitten on his right ankle, causing a deep wound serious enough that he was hospitalized for observation, Whitaker said.
Authorities did not release the name of either victim.
Last year, 23 shark attacks were recorded along the Florida coast, maintaining the state's position as the world's shark attack capital, according to a University of Florida study. Florida's last recorded fatal shark attack was in 2005.

SF,
The real story about the Klammath fish stocks aren't about overfishing its about water. The upper Klammath river is heavily farmed by farmers that are subsidized by the federal government. They grow crops that is water intensive like cotton and rice in a arid environment that is not suitable for agriculture. They take the majority of the water. Without sufficient flow in the Klammath water temps rise and fish kills occur. They have been so many fish kills that fish stocks are dropping fast. It typically takes a salmon 3 years from the time it out migrates to the time its comes back and spawns. Finally the USFWS and National Marine Fisheries Service stepped in and got a court order to release more water for fish and less water for farmers. The farmers then stormed the diversion gates armed and turned the water back on. The local law enforcement did nothing so federal marshals had to step in and close the gates again.
The fish are the canary in the coal mine. Fighting over water will be what the major wars of our children will be fought over. Hell, its already happening its the main reason why Israel will not let go of control over the Golan heights and its reason why both Turkey and Saddam Hussein oppressed the Kurds. Both of these areas are key water supply watersheds for their respective countries and populations. If you control the watershed you have the power. I predict that within our lifetime private lawns will be for the rich only because water will become very, very expensive.
If you have not seen the "Inconvenient Truth" you should rent it and show it to your kids NOW!!! Its damm scary!
Don't even get me started on summer time dam releases for recreational whitewater boaters.
I will step off my soap box now
