We can surf w/out a wetsuit a couple months out of the year....August/Sept. We can hit the mid 60s and higher during those months. It was a lot easier to do when I was younger, hanging out at 26th Ave all summer long.
As far as the Surf City moniker goes, its all a marketing thing anyway. The City of Santa Cruz has been calling itself Surf City since the late 1800's. Surfing was introduced to the mainland United States in Santa Cruz in 1883 here at the Rivermouth. 3 Hawaiian princes were sent over to attend college and, upon seeing waves breaking, had the San Loranzo Lumber Company cut them out 3 redwood planks which they rode here. It was a major event, documented in the newspaper of that time.
But the 'who is the real Surf City' is just an old horse being beaten by Chamber of Commerce dweebs.

BOTHER!
I am a new member to this board, but I had discovered Tom Linn from the members list a month or so ago.
I was a childhood friend of Tom's, and was so looking forward to this convergence, to see him and to get to know many of you.
Tom and I surfed and kneeboarded together as teenagers, in the 70's.
We surfed Huntington and Newport mostly. I still surf that area mostly, when I get a chance.
Oh well. I hope to make the postponement.
Greetings!

Beeline you are absolutely correct we hardly ever get water temps above 60 up here, in fact the only way the water feels warm is when the fog is colder than the water. I don't know what Scotty Mac and Surfhorn have been smokin but it is definately cold, cold, cold up here. And as far as south swells are concerned, again you hit it on the head. We barely get any waves in the summer. Normally we just sit on the beach hoping to get fog tans and pray for the day the sun comes out. You can have the Surf City logo, we have the unofficial Sin City logo all wrapped up.
