wax..

how trippy is that tail??

the bottomturn-topturn thing you describe is perhaps the most appealling thing about this shape.

Even Farrer has commented about this scenario..very interesting to say the least.

The fins are OAM and each has incremental movement..so they can be set (or offset) as the surfer chooses.

The rails are different cause they are different lengths and the tail lift also differs due to the longer rail line on one side.

very difficult to shape actually.

surfed it for the first time Sunday (I tore rib cartilege a few weeks back and couldn't even shape..let alone get wet)..but it felt insane.

Gave it to Anthony Cridland after I had half a dozen just so I could sit on the beach and watch.

very quick, very reponsive. Gets from the long rail (forehand) to the shorter rail (backhand) VERY WELL.

Just gotta get my head around getting the longer rail back in the water once your surfing the 5' 9" side.

anyway..it is all good.

welcome to another Sydney summer with a smile on my face..

PS

Artis is a very welcome inclusion to this site. He was a welcome inclusion to the shaping bay when I was very inexperienced also.

I know what he is talking about and it happened in front of Ian Goodacre..two legends helping a kid from Dee Why dry behind my ears.

And Artis..the 'hint' is just another thing that I still pay attention to today.

Headwax says-Sparrow like max thickness in his boards.

What's that mean?Is there a minimum thickness, and a maximum thickness for a person of a particular weight, height.?[taking into consideration all the other factors]?

Special K..et all

I have known Simon (as friends) for 17 years now.

Yet I have only shaped for him for only the past 5 or 6.

Albert Whiteman (vale Albert) and Wayne Hutch (Kneeon) have put enormous energy into Simon's surfboards for many years before me.

I just happen to shape for him now. His choice and my [time.

I am actually glad that I haven't shaped for Simon earlier..because I may have felt a touch inexperienced.

2004 however is my 30th consecutive year (professional) in Harbord Road (Brookvale) and my 24th (straight) year as a shaper.

I reckon Simon deserved the 18 or 19 years that I had to give him.. :)..[and more.]

Yet now?.. I am (ultra) stoked to provide 25 for January's guns and semi-guns for Hawaii in Feb 05

:D

hart

PS

On topic (really)

Simon's previous shapers all thicknessed around 2 7/8" or 2 15/16"

So I just max him out (and not think of his weight..and in fact, I have NEVER asked..ha!).....just cut (think planer) to minimum.

Yet then?.you have the rails to come.. 8)

And what I do next is nothin' like Albert or Hutchy..

coz its me

:)

low rails keep low profiles..ha

And that Kyle does superb off the top turns because of the sudden change in plan shape curve at the tail of his boards.

Any comment as to why? Somehow the extra curve gets the rest of the rail out of the water.... I can see why, but I can't see why, if you know what I mean.

AF
Andrew

Kyle's shortboards (in Simon's dvd) had 'direction-change' outlines..they look like a slight (single) flyer roundedpin but they are not.

Kyle surfs them unreal..however I would add that his (radical) centre fin position (way forward) has heaps to do with his top-turns as well.

And just as Simon does, Kyle generates accelleration during a turn..kinda makes you want to do more of them..(turns, that is  )

Oh..and I have absolutely no idea how thick any of my boards are under someone's (anyone's) chest..but I can tell you that it is certainly NOT any thicker than the point immediately under someone's knees..

Glad your back..we'll talk this week and get together before Chrissie

andrew (wax)

the dimensions you mention on the other thread sound fine..(I'm not gunna post twice ..do it :) )

ON TOPIC:

I reckon it looks like an uphill run because it is optical..coz if you put a straight edge on it..it OBVIOUSLY goes down.

our eyes look short, yet water flow travels long (ly)....

Yet pivot..it does become.

I really like looking at my boards on someone's roofrack (on their car)..bottom up and about 10 to 15 metres away..or moore. That way you can C what you've shaped.

And..how EASY does Kyle Bryant come off the top? (and think about the apex bit, before)

hart

OFF Tropic (of Capricorn)

After the second day of the Cronulla Pro (some weeks back) I asked someone..

"Who is this guy?'

And well, they answered Andrew

I would talk to this guy as readily as I would talk to you..

:D

2 easy (that is..to come offf the top)

Another question.

Watching sparrow's new stoker I noticed that his five ten seems to "flow" more than the other boards.

Has more bounce and more positive rail to rail... not that the other boards don't tear it apart mind you.

Any comment on this. Or is it my imagination?
I reckon your observation is accurate..more rail to rail is right.

And why?

Simple..the board is a swallowtail..which means a straighter rail line (in planshape) resulting in more tail area. More tail area means more bottom area. This means there is more bottom making contact with the wave.

Now you know what I think about vees and spirals :) ..well I believe that what you are seeing is a direct result of a spiral vee in action.

And it is simply more pronounced on a swallowtail than a pinny because of the added area thru the tail. There is more vee making contact with the water as a result which gives more of a vee type reaction (which naturally, promotes rail to rail action).

(Oh..and the added tail area is only there because it is Simon's absolute shortboard.)

He would spin a tail like that over 4 or 5 foot..such is the power with which he surfs.

hart

Of interest..even his shorty tho' doesn't even make 23" wide. His boards are way narrow

you may be drawn to Pamela Anderson before you notice Audrey Hepburn.

And while that may not be a bad thing.. :?

It certainly would be..a pity
