I got a call from big fred telling me that mike fernandez was injured in Newport this morning. Evidently mike got hit in the face (cheek) and had to go to the hospital..I dont know if it was his water camera or someones board or his own board that he was injured by. hopefully nothing too serious

sure hope it's nothing serious, speedy paddle back into the line up mike,
and just for good measure, placed a call to "Paris" suggesting she stop by your place later for a soothing face rub

I spoke with mike a little while ago and he's doing ok... laughing and happy it wasnt worse
he was hit by his board/go pro he thinks
he drove himself to the hospital with a gash to his chin/cheek he said he was sticking his tounge through the hole
over 30 stitches inside and out to repair the damage
get better soon mike

No worries Mike, that scare will make you even more of a babe magnet.

Sorry to hear this, Mike. I was at 56th and the set waves definitely had some punch, especially on the lower tide. Probably going to be difficult to talk for a little while so I'll give you a little time before I call you direct. Here's to a speedy recovery.

Thank you everyone! I am ok. I had a closeout at Newport today, actually I thought I was going to make it, but somehow I didn't and before I got the slaughter I knew was coming, POOOWWWWW, right in the jaw. Unbelievable. I swear I was still on my board when it hit me. I looked, nobody else's board around. I think I hit my GoPro, not sure, but it was rolling and I have the footage.
I drove from Newport to Long Beach to the VA Hospital. Doctor lost count at around 30 stitches. My tongue was coming out of my face.
Kinda hurts and hurts to talk and eat and I am hungry, but I feel extremely lucky since my neck hurt a little bit.
I could have been like Tom or Kenny, so don't feel sorry for me, I am lucky today thank God.
I am posting photos as the diligent photojournalist that I am.

Nasty Mike Hope you get better quick. Look forward to seeing some of the gopro footage (not of the accident, but of the surf!)
