This has nothing to do with a surf report. I admit I have lost a bit of stoke this winter. Following an awesome indo trip this summer its been a mental chore for me to suit up and deal with OB this season. Besides being a pretty inconsistent fall and early winter I have found myself wandering more into the mountains and seeking solace in quiet backcountry powder runs of the Sierra than I have been watching surfline forecasts. My son has made great leaps in bounds in his ability to ski with me all over the mountains. He now has a yearning and the skill to seek out and explore with me in a way I have never experienced as a father.
The pictures and reports showing the great season southern California is having this year have been inspiring. I do have a lot of stoke for you guys, you were definitely were due for a good one. Good luck to all the contestants in Huntington Beach.
By the way surf is huge here in SF for the last few days but the weekend looks good. However, the powder is piling up so off we go to the mtns. Scott, Don, Bob and the rest get a few for me.

That happened to me after an Aug. in Indo.
Your not missing anything. Too many W swells and too big. Great year for Santa Cruz and socal, bad for us.
Enjoy your time with your son. It will soon be gone. My daughter is 15. Three years 'til college. Enjoy it while you got it.
Hint: Sick days during the week, Cruz runs, one every two weeks, still spend weekends in the snow.
Just an idea.

Surfed 30th street Newport this morning. From Blackies to 36th street it was firing well into the noon hour. Mix of overhead peaks and sectiony walls.
Lots of people but more than enough waves to go around.
Stoked

Successfully infiltrated South Peak at Blacks today for the first time since 1980

Parked at the glider port, and made the walk. The trail is in better shape than I remember, but I thought there would be a huge gondola by now with hairy Leucadia chicks serving tofu.

While walking down the beach, I noticed a few people laying out under the cliffs

I have seen them collapse before in person. Got lucky, and only went under a couple waves during my initial paddle out. It was 10-12ft faces. While paddling out, a seal was checking me out repeatedly from about 10ft away. I was waving at him/her, and chatting

Got my first right within five minutes of getting out, light crowd just as I imagined from bigger days, although it wasn't that heavy. Caught a nice left also, but got caught inside after the wave, and my leash broke from a top to bottom wave.
Walking back a nekkid dude (kinda looked like Shewie) was walking toward me, where is a rockslide when you need one?
I evaded him, but a chick was gawking for about 20 seconds
Glad I finally went down there.

Great Mike! Glad you were able to get some good ones and that it wasn't your board that broke. Are you out through the end of the month??

Hey Mike,
So did you have nightmares about a naked Schoowie standing in the shorebreak waiting for you to lose your board again?
Scary!

Hey Mike, I know what you mean man! I haven't been able to surf Blacks since Oct. I believe there was a nice Fall swell going on, but only about half the size of what you surfed maybe 5-6 ft. Anyway, after surfing I get out of the water and I start hiking back up to the trails but there's this guy with his stark nekkid butt in front of me and I'm thinking, "Oh my God", "Do I have to see this guys a*# in front of me for the next 1/2 mile?"

So I'm trying to walk as fast as I can, but this guy is walking really fast for an old guy, he won't let me overtake him!
I'm thinking the same thing, where's a freakin rockslide whenever you need one?
Finally, I get the trail and I just sigh a big relief!

Mike, a rock slide did kill a guy last year, below the glider port. We are definitely due for another rock slide somewhere.
I never go north of the Ho Chi Minh trail. Too much naked volleyball, and not the good kind!

Surfed 5'-7' high tide glassy peaks by myself yesterday for three hours.
I was hoping someone else would paddle out!
This weekend warrior finally caught the swell not maxing out all the spots around here with with close-outs or OBSF paddle out conditions.
In the words of one of our local meteorology gurus, John Lindsey a meteorologist of PG&E's Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant who writes a sunday weather column in our local rag said in todays column,
" Over my 18 years of forecasting waves along the Central Coast,I've never seen such an extended time frame of high waves"
Its been quite a year.
