Can't wear them, drive me nertz! But! After watching every vid,on every site available,I've come to this conclusion.Flippers and arm paddling combined increases your speed.Watched folks catch waves I'd never get,and I'm a strong paddler.
Longer boards[sans flippers] increase one's ability to catch waves thru arm power alone. And the modern longer KB's surf shorter...to a point.Over some length gotta be a bitch to turn, paddle like hell though..
Anyways thems MY thoughts.
cheers

The other speed factor to consider re arms and flippers (fins) is the amount of waves you go over instead of under because you can get to the lip before they pitch...great for when rougue dumpers appear from nowhere or you caught inside
the extra energy resulting (from not spending time under water) and postioning, due to the rest of the crew being washed back towards shore, means more waves as well

fins
Big thrills dealing with rogue sets side by side with the "armed forces" and I launch into 4-wheel drive. As each wave passes I look back to see how much ground I've gained 'cus I'm engaging fins underwater while depth diving. Big advantage, however, it drains the energy reserves pronto.

Fins BIG fins super ex large Duck feet. I refer to them as my twin out-boards
Ever rude
I have surfed without them (forgot them at home
) Not comfortable with out. Even beating armys to the sppt they still will drop on me. Thats a differnt topic. It really boils down to comfort.
But then agin I am just a below average knee boarder.
In my mind I rip tho

Started out with XXlarge blue duck feet in 1971 that bore holes into foot flesh of ankle bone an formed a mini fleshy volcano right behind toes on both feet. Back then at Bolsa/HB may no fins would work mostly shorter boards, but now long boards is all you see there and fins are a must. Switched to Churchills that feel like butter and got a DC 6'3". I guess I could do without them as I have size 12 EEE feet.

Churchills and volcanos
Volcano, man same terminology, and problem, I must have been 17 had a volcano on the top of my foot, rather the front of the ankle, kept getting damaged from bumping the board, freaking painful. Then we took an mate injured to the hospital, while in the emergency room, joking hey his injury is not as bad as my volcano, ... the emergency room nurse, mother of a surfer came with alcohol and Iodine, and a scrubber, and laid into that volcano, man did it hurt.badknees1 wrote:Started out with XXlarge blue duck feet in 1971 that bore holes into foot flesh of ankle bone an formed a mini fleshy volcano right behind toes on both feet. I had the exact same problems with the old blue Duck Feet in the mid 70's...my volcanos were literally bleeding in the water, and when dry, were filled with pus and sand. Yummy.
30 years later, I still got the scars. My wife thinks they're sexy

From my experience, there are very few top kneelos in Australia that use flippers. As far as Australians, these are all I can think of:PaulN wrote:Out of the pros/top kneelos, who wears or does not wear fins? Why or why not?
Baden Smith
David Parkes
...
Sorry but thats about all I can think of... Can anyone add more names to this post? Please feel free.
