Big Wave Fun

Post by Ross Red »

Years ago when the swell was closing out everywhere, we would go the cliffs above Piker's hole and watch the massive swells. I was told that in the "olden days" the old guys would make you surf Piker's Hole before they would let you surf Cronulla Point.
Imagine my surprise to see that it was "discovered"in the 1990's and renamed "Ours".
I'm just setting the record straight I'd love to show you the photo of Piker's Hole during the June '75 swell. How do you post it?

Yes! Yes! Yes! I've been telling people for years it's real name is Piker's Hole and yes the '75 swell was all time epic (except it was May not June  ) and it was generated by Cyclone Colin. "Ours" .... blah! I also have some photos of Piker's Hole on that swell and will try to put them up.

That swell was unbelievable. I surfed Kurnell Point in the 6 to 8 foot plus range (after the swell started to settled down). Same swell that broke up the old wharf at the Captain Cook landing site. They were chunks of wharf floating around the break. Also the bouys inside Botany Bay recorded swells in excess of 25 feet. 25 feet inside Botany Bay!

Surfed that swell with two other kneelos, Jim Montgomery and Johnny Watts. Word really got out about Kurnell Point after the May swell, next time it broke crowds came from everywhere, even remember Peter Crawford and his Northern Beaches entourage turning up.

As for Piker's Hole being some sort of "manhood" test for Cronulla Point - nah, not true. Although I do recall resident Point kneelo, Paul "The Bear" Burridge surfing Piker's Hole around that time.

sometimes photos wont upload into the album, then you gotta upload em onto a www.photobucket.com account then use the img code provided at the bottom right of your uploaded photo....

paste the code into your post on this thread and we should all be able to see it....

you need to use the image code for forums ...(there will be a few different codes provided, all labeled for their use...

good luck..

Oh so true RMcknee!!! re the big assed swell in 74... I'm pretty sure that was the one that undermined 1st ramp at the Di. Neilson Park and Chinamans went off too!!! A couple a days later as things settled down bloody Brad Mayes, Dave Cram and one or two others dragged me out at Tammo/Mackenzie's breaking way out and across into Bronte. Won't forget that session EVER!!! Thought I was a hero till BIG Terrigal Haven taught me otherwise  .

I knew "Ours" had another name from another time. I used to work with "Bear" and "John Waterworth" and heard tales of it from them. I used to counter with "Pussy Cat" and braving unknown diseases at Malabar :D....
Ahhh.... classic days.

D'oh! Me bad! Typo dislexia!! That should have been Cyclone Colin in '74, not '75. So basicaly we are talking the same swell.

I knew for sure that Bear had surfed Pikers Hole and was pretty sure Johnny Waterworth had too but didn't want to "say it" and place John somewhere he wasn't unless I had confirmed with him. I'll ask him next time I see him.

I'm in the process of packing up all my belongings and moving to a new place I've bought on Cronulla Point (40 sec walk to check out the Point, the Patch & the Island) and I'm trying to locate the photos as I go, best as I can figure it they have already been packed away. It might end up being a few months before I locate them as I have masses of renovations to do on the new place so won't be unpacking in a hurry. Will still keep an eye out for them as I go.

Funny to hear Pussy Cats mentioned - Peter Berry and Cameron Haynes were always talking about Pussy Cats - one's on the northside of the Botany Bay headlands and the other's on the southside. Captain Cook sure knew how to find good wave spots!
