Oahu Kneelos?

Post by byunhosa »

Brethren,

I'll be on Oahu June 13-21 -- my son's playing in the Far West Regional soccer tournament. We're staying in town. I'd rather not be relegated to fighting the long-board crowd in town just to get a surf in, and I can't get the hall pass to drive half-way across the island. Advice on kneelo-friendly options for this time of year?

Town has a lot of spots that will not necessarily be longboard dominated. It is likely to be pretty crowded but if you are strategic on when you paddle out and patient when you are surfing you will get waves. As much as their reputations can discourage a person, breaks like Bowls and Kaisers still deliver and just a couple of waves can make one's day or week. For the south facing beaches I'd say your biggest concern is swell. If it is pumping and you are halfway competent at surfing you will have absolutely no difficulty getting waves. On the other hand, if there is just a typical background, side refraction, weak bump coming in, then town sucks and every negative thing you may have heard about it will come true.

There's some chance to get waves on the North Shore.
The season's been running late and looks like it might continue.

Quote from the local surf forecasters about long range predictions,

"For northern shores, models keep a trough in the jet stream over the longitudes near the dateline to Hawaii, which keeps potential open for more above average surf."

Been pumping out here for a week.
Unless you want to surf Pipeline and that area, crowds are mellow and friendly.
I've been surfing with just a few friends (2-3) mostly, and no more than a dozen.

Saturday afternoon (2-utill dark) had only 3 others out, and the central reef area here, was like 6' Pipeline !

Rocky Pt was also excellent and few people, (according to Billabong team manager Rainos Hayes).

If tiny Japanese tourist girls can get waves, then you should be able to.

Winds were light S-SW turning to light E- ENE. (at present)
Surf's 3-4' today, as it's getting light.

This is a small island.

Takes only 2 hrs to circumnavigate it.
Waikiki to North Shore only 45 min.

And we get surf on all sides at all times of the year
.

Snoop around, you might stumble upon some great surf.
Much of it is within sight of the road.
Enjoy the adventure.

Thanks guys! I've been in Town when a good, week long south swell hit, and it was brilliant. Maybe I'll get lucky this trip. I've never been fortunate to score Kaisers -- either too little swell or too much crowd. I'll take Bud's advice and try to find where the female Japanese tourists are catching waves. . .
