A new board on its way...
After seeing my local at 2x-3x I rang Parksey and threw one in the mix for bigger days here. Hopefully this will make it over to the NS Gathering in Feb.

It must be good to actually get swell - I've just got a new grovel board (speed panel, of course) because I have killed my old one in a year because of an almost complete absence of waves.
You'll love it!! Specially when it does get big and you a need a board that WILL perform.

Waves over here are just getting going for us in Nor Cal. A bit cooler than usual but I'll take it... that's what hooded 5/3's are for
Are you heading to the PI comp? If not get on a frickin' plane and head this way! We'll take care of you once you land. It's going to be a good time at the Santa Cruz festival.

whats a speed panel?
I was eyeing off techno's 6'2 rounded pin with boxes for my performance board but after Beelines post about swallow tails and hold - against double pins in the cresent tail thread - yours is looking the goods - though my height perhaps keeps me at the 6ft range

when is a " fish " tail a swallow tail ?
Forgive my less technical approach to nomincalture... perhaps this is a swallow tail...
I guess you'll have to consult w/ Lis on the boundries
If it's got 2 points on the tail and looks like a fish tail I call it a fish tail.
While my personal opinion is that a fish has a wider spread between the points and the depth of the V, I fnd it easier to type "fish" rather than "swallow"...
It's all good. I'm more concerned about the rail curve and bottom shape. For larger waves (10' faces w/ good power) if it comes back to the last 12" of the board the rail curve has already done its job in my book. The tail shape is probably adding less than 10% difference to the overall performance at that point. (again, my .02). My last medium size board was a roundish pintail so it will be good to feel the difference (if I can remember what that one rode like
... they come and go so fast )
So, I've had great success with David's "fish" tails (he prefers to call them "fish-type tails" ... again, too much typing
)
As for the Speed Panel, it's just a slight concave thru the belly moving to a Vee in the tail. Nothing "new"... but hey, when it's 2x+ and I need a board to "GO" and then need it to "TURN" I like to go with something I've ridden before.... I'm old school.
I salute those of you pushing design and putting these boards thru the paces. I'll adopt to your concepts eventually. Right now I just need to make the paddle out to the outer sand bars on the big days and enjoy a few turns.

hmmmm, so you want to know about speed panels, huh?
Well, don’t know too much about them but they work for me. I’ve been riding them in their current form for about three and a half years – and what I do know is this.
They provide controlled speed that you can access when you want it. And by that it means learning how to ride them and make them work. They are not a lazy board, by any definition. You actually have to “ride” them to make them work.
The speed panel seems to work in all sorts of ways. It creates water flow through the concave, and V, and increases and changes that water flow because it is forcing the water to travel through the concave and then out the V.
In another sense, while providing all of this extra curved surface on the bottom, it is also creating extra straight lines: the edges of the concave running down the edges of the V. So, through the bottom of the board, you’ve also got extra straight lines for driving.
So when you put it all together for Don’s board, and add to the mix the leverage you will get off the edges of the swallow tail, plus the drive and positive response of the four-fins, you should have a board that is well and truly suited to situations when you need speed AND control, plus access to more speed if you need it. Sort of like putting your foot on the accelerator.
I really like them. My 5’10” double-flyer rounded pin-tail speed panel board is just a dream. You can be so precise in your positioning, and use of the edge, and access to speed – especially in the tube. You can speed up and slow down with the speed of the barrel…… of course it doesn’t help if you just take off way too late and face-plant it into the bottom, but hey! It’s all a learning curve, or staright line for drive....I can never remember

Ive got a 5'10" double concave V. I bought the board 2nd hand from Dave in near new condition 6 months ago, so not having heard the term im interested to know if its a feature of mine - and as Don said its nothing new - then perhaps
you have dangeled the line with "knowing how to ride them" without seemingly adding the actuality - is there a body posture, weight transference involved or is it all 'you know it when you feel and cant really explain it sorta thing"

in actuality, every board has a learning curve.
Consider angle takeoffs with the simple goal of finding down the line speed, meaning take the bottom turn out of the equation for awhile. Try various methods of pumping the board to test your rails including the palm on nose deck to help forward lean trick instead of the grab-rail forward lean method. your goal is to find the line your board likes best simply driving down the wall. you're looking for relaxed flying, harmony, body composure...your center. find that and you can build everything else.
