I live on the Surf Coast in Victoria these days and have a "quiet spot" that I surf with a mate most weekends. It's not secret because when I gets crowded, there can be up to 6 guys on the break. Originally from South Australia, you could spend a year on that coastline and never surf every...

I'm sitting here enjoying a glass of red (I hear it's a good antioxidant) and reading this post feeling pretty good about things. I'm 45, as fit as ever, carrying a little extra weight but nothing to worry about and life is good. Surf-wise like most of you guys, I've got better with age. Although I ...

The quad. And yes, it killed the session. I was taking in water, listing badly and going down by the bow.

...it's a beautiful sunny Winter morning... as glassy as it gets, swell is about 3 ft and you're grinning from ear to ear as you paddle out with nobody else around. You stroke into your first wave, the reef sucks dry and the nose of your board now looks like a stubbed out cigarette.

Thanks K-man. No pain yet. More worried about the left knee. I look forward to the day that we can rebuild ourselves like classic cars. Into the workshop...a few grand and we're good for another 100,000 kms. I'm talking about the " 62 model fully restored to showroom condition" rather than...

My left shoulder "clicks" when I paddle. I suspect the universal joint is wearing out.

I have a 5mm (that’s just over ¼”) plastic tube running from my nob down the inside of my right leg, up again, down my left leg, up again, running a zig-zag pattern up my back until it finally exits into the air behind my neck. It’s like a do-it-yourself heating element. I’m warm…but I have no frien...

Victoria, April (after Easter, after the tourists) and May. Consistent 4 ft and offshore. Warm days, cool mornings. The best time of year.

Living in South Australia as I did a few years ago…the threat of shark attack from a White is quite real. This hasn’t curbed my enthusiasm for surfing…but I swear…you develop a 6th sense for sharks. I’d be interested to know if any other guys get the vibe….particularly those from South Africa and So...

Dorjie...when Mother Nature fronts up to 13th Beach, suits up and paddles out with a leaking corpse in the water...that's when I'll be confident enough to paddle out as well...and not experience the meaning of the term "the food chain". Many years ago when I was living in South Australia, ...

Dorjie... you are right...the Island guys are good to deal with. Now you know why I drive 2.5 hours to Phillip Island to get my boards'n'stuff when Torquay is 20 minutes down the road. It will be interesting to know whether you enjoy your Island quad as much as I do mine.

Damn Dorjie...you are right. I've set myself up as a controlled experiment. Without going into too much detail...Neil Luke has shaped me two boards. Both are 6'3" x 24 1/2" x 2 34"...as I am 6'4" tall and about 260 lbs (118 kg). I am stoked with the outcome. The boards have disce...

1980 I was 18, 6'4" tall and riding a stand up board. There's a reason giraffes do not surf. They are tall, gangly, top-heavy with a crap centre of gravity. This lead to bodyboarding. This was great for about a year, then my weight began to normalise relative to my height and the bodyboard didn...

Kev...you got me wondering...is the quad narrow in the tail? So I dragged both boards out of the shed...stripped off their covers and laid them out on the loungeroom floor (as you do). And you know what...the quad did look a little narrower in the tail than the tri-fin. So to be sure...I took out al...
